In spring 2026, Elvira Notari. Beyond Silence, directed by Valerio Ciriaci, embarked on a major international tour of screenings and events across the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland, with stops in New York, Rochester, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, San Diego, Detroit, and then Edinburgh, Limerick, Exeter, Bristol, Brighton and Hove, London, and Cambridge.
This marked a particularly meaningful step in the international rediscovery of Elvira Notari. More than a century ago, the filmmaker brought Neapolitan cinema to the Little Italies of America without ever crossing the ocean herself. Today, in some way, that journey has finally been completed, extending beyond the United States to include some of the leading cultural and academic centres of the English-speaking world. The first feature-length documentary dedicated to her work has thus opened a new chapter in the circulation of her legacy.
The tour began on April 6 in New York, at Film Forum, and continued through major universities, cinematheques and cultural venues across the United States, before moving on in late April and early May to the United Kingdom and Ireland. At several stops, the film was accompanied by conversations with director Valerio Ciriaci, producer Antonella Di Nocera, and other guests.
Premiering at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, Elvira Notari. Beyond Silence is directed by Valerio Ciriaci and produced by Parallelo 41 Produzioni, Awen Films and Luce Cinecittà.
The international tour was made possible with the support of Regione Campania and Film Commission Regione Campania, together with the partners involved in the various stages, including cultural institutions, universities, festivals and Italian Cultural Institutes.
